Daughter of Zoo Atlanta Gorilla Willie B., Pregnant

Zoo Atlanta will soon be introduced to a brand-new addition to family of western lowland gorillas, sixteen year old Kudzoo, is pregnant. The gorilla is expecting her second infant in 2011; this offspring will be the third grandchild of Zoo Atlanta’s legendary Willie B.

The Zoo Atlanta Animal Management and Veterinary Teams think Kudzoo is roughly two months into her pregnancy. Gorilla gestation averages 8.5 months, suggesting a birth in late spring 2011. The Veterinary Team is monitoring Kudzoo closely and is conducting monthly pregnancy tests, as she is known to have experienced at least one previous miscarriage.

Six year old, Kudzoo, was the celebrated firstborn of Willie B., who passed away in 2000. All four of her siblings – Olympia, 14; Sukari, 12; Willie B. Jr., 12; and Lulu, 11 – still reside at Zoo Atlanta, as does Kudzoo’s mother, Choomba.

It's A Boy, Zoo Atlanta Baby Panda Gender Announced

It’s a boy. There’s good news in Grant Park; the only giant panda born in the United States in 2010 is a male.  The giant panda cub born to Zoo Atlanta’s, Lun Lun, is on November 3, 2010, and has been determined to be male. The cub’s sex was revealed during an exam by the Zoo Atlanta Veterinary Team and a colleague from the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding.
The Veterinary Team began conducting routine exams late last week, when Lun Lun began leaving the cub for brief periods to eat and drink. The newborn, who weighs just over 11 ounces, has also begun to develop his species’ trademark coloration of black saddles on the shoulders and black patches over his eyes, although his eyes are not yet open.

While Lun Lun and the cub are not expected to make their debut to Members and guests until Spring 2011, web users can follow the pair on PandaCam presented by Earthcam, Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
