Run Wild 5K Challenges Runners to "Beat the Karhu Bear"

GRANT PARK, Ga. – (submitted by the Georgia Marathon) Because Karhu mean’s ‘bear’ in Finnish, The Run Wild 5K, a part of the Publix Georgia Marathon race weekend of events, invites runners to come out on Saturday, March 19, and try to "Beat the Karhu Bear."  The first 10 runners who "Beat the Karhu bear” during the 5K and cross the finish line before the bear, will be presented with a coupon good for a FREE pair of Karhu running shoes of their choice.  Others who finish ahead of the Karhu Bear will receive a free Karhu t-shirt.  The race starts and finishes on the Circle Drive near the Cyclorama in the Grant Park area at 8AM.  The Run Wild 5K will be followed by the Kids Fun Run at 9AM, open to all kids age 10 and under.

Fulton County's unemployment rate rises to 10.7 percent

ATLANTA – According to State Labor Commissioner Mark Butler the preliminary unadjusted unemployment rate in the metro Atlanta area increased to 10.4 percent in January, up three-tenths of a percentage point from a revised 10.1 percent in December.

Previously, in 2010, the jobless rate in the metro Atlanta area was 10.7 percent. Unemployment in Fulton County, currently, sits at 10.7 percent. The rate increased because of layoffs in manufacturing, construction and administrative and support services.

ATLANTA -- Tonight, the East Atlanta Community Association will meet at Branan Towers to discuss various neighborhood issues. Officials from the organization will be accepting $10 dues for membership. Also, you may purchase an EACA yard sign customized with your house number for $25.

Branan Towers is located at 1200 Glennwood Avenue in Atlanta.

Be My Neighbor!  Effective Neighborhood Watch Programs

ATLANTA – (submitted by Fourth Ward Alliance) Neighborhood watch groups are effective because they decrease opportunities for criminals to commit crime.  The added bonus is the cohesiveness it provides between members of your community. 

This workshop will educate you on the most effective ways of identifying and reporting suspicious activity and mobilizing your neighborhood watch program:

  • Why is there a need for a neighborhood watch program?
  • What is needed to start a neighborhood watch program?
  • A perspective on the neighborhood watch program.
  • How to get your program started.
  • Resources to keep you informed.
  • Ways to stay connected - ideas, technology and the internet.

This meeting will be held on Saturday March 12th from 9AM to 12PM at the Clark Harrison Building (Conference Room A) 330 West Ponce de Leon Avenue in Decatur.

East Atlanta Security Patrol Offer Residents A Deal

ATLANTA – The East Atlanta Security Patrol is offering all patrol members who sign-up for, at least, six months will receive the remainder of March for free.

According to the patrol, for the week of February 27th, Beat 610 (EAV) now has the most crime in Zone 6.
