Atlanta BeltLine to host bicycle tour this weekend

ATLANTA -- The Atlanta BeltLine Partnership will team up with the Atlanta Bicycle Coalition for a tour this weekend.

The 7th annual Atlanta BeltLine Bicycle Tour will be held Saturday, June 14. Staggered rides through the BeltLine's 45 neighborhoods will begin at 9 a.m. from the Historic Fourth Ward Skatepark.

Riders have a choice of two tours: the full BeltLine, which is 27 miles long; and the East Meets West route -- 16 miles of some of the trail's most beautiful parks.

Advance registration is $30 for members of the Atlanta BeltLine or Atlanta Bicycle Coalition, and $35 for the general public. On-site registration opens at 8 a.m. and is $40 for members and $45 for non-members.

Race this weekend: Hands Around the Hill

ATLANTA -- The Hands Around the Hill 5K will be held this weekend in Downtown Atlanta and the nearby Grant Park neighborhood.

Hands Around the Hill raises money for homeless Atlantans and others who lack basic necessities. Registration is $25 in advance; there is no race day sign-up.

The event will be held Saturday, June 14 at 8 a.m. Packet pick-up will take place at the starting line near the corner of Mitchell and Washington streets. Parking will be provided at the underground garage next to the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception; the area is also easily accessible from the Five Points and Georgia State MARTA stations.

All runners will receive cotton T-shirts and will be entered into a drawing for great prizes. Participants will also be treated to fruit, bagels, Larabars and post-race fun at the finish line.

Fulton County Aviation Community Cultural Center to open June 19

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. -- Fulton County Commissioner Emma I. Darnell, District 5, the Fulton County Board of Commissioners and Fulton County Arts and Culture, will celebrate the Grand Opening of the Fulton County Aviation Community Cultural Center (ACCC) on Thursday, June 19 at 10 a.m.

The grand opening celebration will kick off three days of activities organized to introduce the new facility to the community and increase awareness of the center, its programming and activities. 

The center is located at 3900 Aviation Circle, Atlanta on the grounds of Fulton County Airport – Brown Field.  It is designed as a community gathering place and will focus on the following types of programming:

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. -- Stress management and mental health discussions are planned during the first week in June at two Fulton County senior multipurpose facilities.

The Dorothy C. Benson Senior Multipurpose Complex will host a mental health workshop sponsored by the Renaissance on Peachtree on Thursday, June 5. The discussion will be facilitated by Leslie Sessley, a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) with the Link Counseling Center. Art Gone Wild to raise money for Zoo Atlanta

ATLANTA -- Zoo Atlanta has teamed up with Cartersville's Booth Western Art Museum for a fundraising event.

Art Gone Wild, an art show and silent auction, will be held at the zoo on Saturday, June 14 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Attendees will bid on zoo-inspired artwork and mingle with the artists themselves during the event. All Art Gone Wild artists have agreed to donate 50 percent of their proceed from the auction to the zoo.

The event will also promote Art and the Animal, the current exhibition at Booth.

Art Gone Wild tickets are $35 for Zoo Atlanta members and $40 for non-members, and include zoo admission, entertainment during the event, and food and drinks.

Seniors tour Wheat Street Gardens during 'Celebrating Seniors Garden Party'

ATLANTA -- Fulton County Seniors from senior centers across Atlanta and Fulton County enjoyed a “Celebrating Seniors Garden Party” as May Older Americans Month activities continued on Thursday, May 22.

The “Garden Party” featured lunch, games, healthy cooking demonstrations and tours of Wheat Street Gardens, a beautiful network of flower and vegetable gardens. The party was hosted by Open Hand and Truly Living Well and supported by Fulton County District 6 Commissioner Joan P. Garner, Atlanta City Councilmember Kwanza Hall, State Senator Nan Orrock and local businesses.

Open Hand provides congregate and home-delivered meals along with nutrition education to Fulton County seniors through the Housing and Human Services Department, Office of Aging.

Seniors line dance during Community Day at the Bowden Senior Multipurpose Facility

Fulton County seniors practiced their line dancing skills during the first Fulton County Senior Multipurpose Facility Community Day celebration.  Community day is an annual event that is held in May of each year at the county’s four senior multipurpose facilities in observance of Older Americans Month. The HJC Bowden Senior Multipurpose facility also offered a tai chi demonstration, face painting for children, a basketball hoop for boys and girls to practice shooting hoops, mini-train rides for families, food and other entertainment.  Additional Community Days for seniors, their friends and families will be held at the following senior multipurpose facilities:
