Splash Fountain coming to Zoo Atlanta

ATLANTA -- Zoo Atlanta guests will have a new way to cool off this summer.

The zoo announced Monday that it will add a Splash Fountain on its grounds.

The fountain, which is sponsored by the Atlanta Fulton County Recreation Authority, will be an interactive water feature that will give zoo visitors a refreshing way to take a break. More details will become available as construction gets underway.

"We're delighted about opening the Splash Fountain this summer," Zoo Atlanta president and CEO Raymond B. King said in a statement. "Zoo Atlanta enjoys a reputation as an outstanding family destination, and this feature will give our members and guests yet another fun reason to visit, play and explore the zoo."

ATLANTA -- The Health Institute will hold a walk-a-thon this weekend to encourage children to live healthier lives.

The Greatest Race of All for Children Everywhere (GRACE) will be held Sunday, May 5 at 8 a.m.

Race entry is $29.99 for adults and $19.99 for children up to age 12. The price includes admission to the event, a T-shirt and a chance to win fantastic prizes.

GRACE will be held at Zoo Atlanta in Grant Park, which is located at 840 Cherokee Avenue SE.

ATLANTA -- April is National Minority Health Month. This year’s theme, “Health Equity Can’t Wait: Act Now in Your CommUNITY!”, is a call to action and unity for the nation to get involved and invested in reducing health disparities.  Since 2009, Fulton County Health and Human Services has been providing integrated services to residents in an effort to address health disparities and assist them with living healthier lifestyles.

“Fulton County continues to address health disparities that affect some of our communities more than others,” states Patrice A. Harris, MD, Director of Fulton County Health Services. “Everyone has a stake in community health; we have to work together to find solutions.”

Pure Tennis offering group lessons for kids

ATLANTA -- Pure Tennis will hold clinics for local kids next month.

The lessons will run from Apr. 15 to June 3, and will be held at the Grant Park Tennis Courts for children in Glenwood Park, Grant Park, Ormewood Park and the surrounding communities.

The sessions are geared toward children aged 3-14. The registration deadline is Monday, Apr. 8.

Safe Kids Fulton County celebrates 20 years

ATLANTA -- Area residents are invited to join the Safe Kids Fulton County Coalition to celebrate 20 years of service to help keep kids safe.

The special event is scheduled for Thursday, March 29  from 10:00 am -12:00 pm at The Villages at Carver Family YMCA located at 1600 Pryor Street, SE. They will recognize current members and partners dedicated to saving kids’ lives by developing and conducting programs that reduce or eliminate preventable, unintentional injuries and deaths.

The coalition targets the four most common areas of unintentional injuries through education and awareness:

  • Traffic Injuries (passenger, pedestrian, bicycle)
  • Fires and Burns
  • Drowning and near drowning
  • Poison Prevention
