Zoo Atlanta orangutan is pregnant

ATLANTA -- A 16-year-old Sumatran orangutan at Zoo Atlanta is expecting her second child.

Zoo Atlanta spokeswoman Keisha Hines said zoo veterinarians expect the orangutan, Blaze, to give birth in January 2013. If the baby lives, it will be the first surviving child for her and 33-year-old Benny; Blaze delivered a stillborn infant in August 2011.

"While all births are significant, a newborn Sumatran orangutan would be a crucial new addition to a critically endangered species," Hines said in a statement.

Zoo Atlanta currently has 13 orangutans -- the nation's largest zoological collection of the animals.
