Woman killed in drive-by shooting in SE Atlanta | News
ATLANTA – A woman was killed in a drive-by shooting in southeast Atlanta early Saturday, police said. Two other passengers in the vehicle were believed to have been injured in an ensuing crash.
The incident happened on Milton Avenue at Hank Aaron Drive. Officers arrived to the scene of a flipped car and found the vehicle riddled with bullet holes. The driver of the vehicle – a woman in her late 20s – died at the scene after being shot once in the face with a .223 rifle.
Police say officers initially responded to what they thought was a traffic incident.
"The vehicle had been in a rollover accident subsequent to hitting a tree," said Captain Michael O'Connor with the Atlanta Police Department. "Further investigation of the incident revealed that the vehicle had been shot numerous times."
After being shot, the driver apparently lost control of the vehicle, which crashed. Two passengers were taken to Grady Memorial Hospital with injuries from the crash.
Thomas McGruder owns a grocery store just around the corner from where the shooting happened. He says the neighborhood had been turning around.
"They used to be fighting by the hundreds out there, swarms of them you know, but that done stopped, died down," he said.
Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to contact police.
