Atlanta, GA--  The Grant Park Cooperative Preschool (GPCP) is hosting a special fundraising event highlighted by a concert featuring legendary blues icon Francine Reed and the Gravediggers.  The evening includes a gourmet dinner, raffle and live and silent auctions of exclusive and extraordinary items, including original art, travel packages and one-of-a-kind experiences for all ages.  A cash bar is available or patrons can upgrade to a VIP ticket for access to unlimited beer and wine.

Atlanta Ballet to Host 60 H.S. Students for Workshop with Renowned African Dance Choreographers

ATLANTA – Students from schools like Maynard Jackson, Carver and North Atlanta High School will participate in an African Dance Workshop Lambarena’s Dr. Zak and Naomi Diouf on Saturday, February 26th. Lambarena is a ballet that aims to blend “traditional African rhythms and dance with melodic passages from Johann Sebastian Bach”. It’s an emotion-filled work in eight movements that boldly merges the sights and sounds of classical ballet with African Dance.

As a part of Atlanta Ballet’s community outreach initiative, the company has invited 60 Atlanta-area students from four of its partner high schools to a special workshop with renowned African dance choreographers Dr. Zak and Naomi Diouf.

The husband-and-wife duo is in Atlanta to set the African-inspired ballet Lambarena on Atlanta Ballet.

Georgia-Pacific to donate supplies to APS classrooms

ATLANTA – (Atlanta Public Schools) All APS elementary school classrooms will receive boxes of school supplies from Atlanta-based Georgia-Pacific, as part of a month-long national corporate employee campaign that started last month on the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King’s birthday and will conclude at the end of February.

The company will deliver the supplies, including notebook paper, pencils, pens, construction paper, crayons and hand sanitizer to M. Agnes Jones Elementary School at Noon Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2011.  Along with these “care boxes”, each elementary school will also receive two cases of office paper, paper towels and facial tissue products.

Georgia-Pacific employees will arrive at the school on a chartered school bus, as they do on a weekly basis to engage in mentoring activities with students through the Atlanta Partners for Education program.

GPCP Blue Note Bash To Feature Blues Singer Francine Reed

ATLANTA – (Grant Park Cooperative Pre-School) This year, the GPCP Blue Note Bash will be held on February 25th. Organizers have secured Atlanta blues legend Francine Reed along with the Graveyard Tavern’s own Gravediggers for the entertainment! If you have never heard Ms. Reed before, she is a treat. Best known for her years as featured vocalist with Lyle Lovett’s Large Band, she sings an eclectic blend of jazz, blues, and R&B and has recorded with Willie Nelson, Delbert McClinton and Roy Orbison.

Postcards about the event will available for distribution next week, so start thinking about who you want to invite. Our event is a great night out that you can share with family and friends, married couples and single friends. Make sure you tell people that 100% of the proceeds go to support the preschool. Where else can you get dinner, a concert, free parking and support our fantastic school for $15 or $20 at the door.

Grant Park Cooperative Preschool To Hold Open Registration, February 5th

Families interested in enrolling at the Grant Park Cooperative Preschool are required to attend one Open House session in order to learn about the nature of our “cooperative preschool.” Please help us spread the word about our Open Houses among your friends and neighbors.

Applications and fees must be received no later than 4:00pm on Thursday, February 10, 2011 to be eligible for consideration. New Family registration runs from January 30 - February 10, 2011. However, the school will be holding a registration event on February 5th from 10:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m.

The Grant Park Cooperative Preschool is located at 177 Estoria Street, Southeast in Atlanta.

Doc Chey’s Noodle House Helps Raise Funds for The Intown Academy

Friends and family of The Intown Academy are invited to dine out at Doc Chey’s Noodle House in Grant Park on Tuesday, January 25th, this event is a fundraiser which is being hosted by the schools PTO.  

The Intown Academy just opened in August and the school presently has about 350 students in kindergarten-sixth grade. Each year, the school will add a new grade level and by the 2012-2013 school year, it will include 8th grade.

Georgia’s wintry weather may have temporarily dominated news headlines, but nine high schools in the Fulton County School System are ready to take their place in the spotlight after being named to Atlanta Magazine’s annual list of “Best High Schools.” 

Tri-Cities was listed as one of the Best in atlanta for Fine Arts.

The magazine compared course offerings, facilities, extracurricular activities, awards and national test performance. Results were reported across a broad spectrum of categories to include general academics, math, science, language arts, performing/visual arts and sports.

Additionally, the magazine compiled a list of “Top All-Around” achievers, which are schools that made the cut in all categories.
